Gelephu International Airport Launches First International Flight, Marks Historic Milestone ✈️🇧🇹🇮🇳

Gelephu International Airport achieved a major milestone today with the successful launch of its first-ever international flight on the Gelephu–Kolkata–Gelephu route. Operated by Drukair, the inaugural service officially establishes Gelephu as Bhutan’s newest international aviation gateway.

This landmark development is expected to significantly boost regional connectivity for investors, visitors, and travellers, unlocking vast economic opportunities across tourism, trade, logistics, and services.

Beginning December 12, 2025, Drukair will operate two scheduled commercial flights per week—every Monday and Friday.
Flight Schedule:
[KB210] GLU → CCU | Departure: 12:10 | Arrival: 13:10
[KB211] CCU → GLU | Departure: 13:50 | Arrival: 15:20

The inaugural launch event was graced by Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, who formally inaugurated the international operations at the Gelephu airport.

Onboard the first flight, Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) Governor Dasho Dr Lotay Tshering emphasized the significance of enhanced connectivity for GMC’s growth as a vibrant regional hub.
“With the launch of international flights, Gelephu will connect Bhutan more seamlessly with our neighbours and partners. This marks our readiness to engage the region through mindful, sustainable, and future-focused development,” he said.

Drukair CEO Tandi Wangchuk described the launch as “more than just a route expansion,” calling it the opening of Bhutan’s future gateway. “With direct links to Kolkata, Gelephu will accelerate its transformation into a global destination for mindful living, innovation, and sustainable development,” he added.

This marks the first international flight operation from Gelephu International Airport since receiving its Aerodrome Certificate from the Bhutan Civil Aviation Authority in September 2023, confirming its compliance with global aviation safety and operational standards.

The historic launch signals a new era in Bhutan’s aviation and economic landscape, positioning Gelephu at the forefront of regional connectivity and development.
