Two Arrested With 6,462 Capsules in Jaigaon During Attempt to Smuggle Drugs Into Bhutan
Jaigaon Police, in coordination with Bhutan Police, arrested two youths on Saturday for attempting to smuggle a large consignment of narcotic capsules into Bhutan. Acting on a tip-off received through confidential sources, police intercepted the suspects near the Jaigaon Post Office, in front of a hotel, while they were walking along the footpath carrying the contraband.
According to police, both accused are residents of Jharna Basti in Jaigaon. They had packed the narcotic capsules in a plastic carry bag and were preparing to cross into Bhutan when police apprehended them. A total of 6,462 capsules were recovered from their possession. The duo was arrested on the spot, and a case has been registered against them under relevant sections of the NDPS Act. On Sunday, they were produced before the court.
Speaking at a press conference, Jaigaon SDPO Prashant Devnath said that the operation was carried out based on specific intelligence shared jointly by Jaigaon Police and Bhutan Police regarding an attempt to smuggle narcotics into Bhutan through Jaigaon. He added that an investigation is underway to determine the source of the drugs and identify others involved in the network.
The SDPO further stated that police will continue strict action until drug trafficking is completely eliminated from Jaigaon. He also announced that awareness camps will be organised in the coming days to educate the public and help prevent youth from falling victim to drug abuse.
