Alternative Hume Pipe Bridge at Dudhia Completed — Traffic to Resume from Tomorrow
Dudhia, West Bengal | October 26, 2025
True to her promise, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee once again stands as an example of commitment and swift governance. The much-awaited construction of the alternative Hume Pipe Bridge at Dudhia has been successfully completed in record time, ensuring smooth connectivity for the people of the region. Authorities have announced that normal vehicular movement over the new bridge will resume from tomorrow.
The newly constructed bridge spans a total length of 468 meters, featuring a 72-meter-long Hume Pipe causeway with a width of 8 meters. The project utilized 132 Hume pipes, each 1,200 millimeters in diameter, and remarkably, the entire structure was completed within just 16 days—a testament to efficient planning, engineering precision, and the government’s proactive approach.
The old bridge at Dudhia, built in 1965, had been showing signs of severe wear and structural weakness in recent years, posing serious safety concerns and disrupting smooth traffic flow. Recognizing the urgency, the state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, promptly initiated the construction of this alternative bridge as an immediate relief measure.
Meanwhile, the government has already begun work on a new permanent bridge at the same site, sanctioned with an estimated budget of ₹54 crore. Once completed, this modern bridge is expected to significantly boost inter-district connectivity and facilitate the transportation of goods and people between key regions, strengthening trade, tourism, and local livelihoods.
The completion of the Hume Pipe Bridge within such a short period has been widely appreciated by residents, commuters, and local traders who had faced considerable inconvenience due to the weakened old bridge. Local authorities and engineers credited the project’s success to round-the-clock work, favorable weather, and the government’s continuous monitoring.
“This is yet another example of the Chief Minister’s commitment to keeping her word and delivering timely results,” said a senior official from the Public Works Department. “The people of Dudhia and adjoining areas can now travel safely and conveniently once again.”
With normal traffic set to resume from tomorrow, the new Hume Pipe Bridge at Dudhia stands as a symbol of the state government’s efficiency, responsiveness, and dedication to public welfare — a clear reflection of the Chief Minister’s governance philosophy: “Work speaks louder than words.”
