Three Shooters Arrested Near India-Bhutan Jaigaon Border in Punjab Batala Double Murder Case

Punjab Police has achieved a major breakthrough in the high-profile Batala double murder case with the arrest of three alleged shooters from Jaigaon near the India-Bhutan border in West Bengal.

The operation was jointly carried out by the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) of Punjab Police along with Jaigaon Police and Alipurduar District Police. The arrested accused have been identified as Jatin Singh, Sajandeep Singh, and Mehakdeep Singh, all residents of Amritsar.

According to police sources, the three accused are linked to the notorious Happy Jatt gang, which is being operated from abroad, and were directly involved in the double murder that took place in Batala on April 27. The incident had sparked widespread outrage across Punjab after 19-year-old kabaddi player Jugraj Singh and another person were shot dead.

Investigators revealed that the accused were planning to flee to a Southeast Asian country through Bhutan by taking advantage of the open India-Bhutan border. Acting on technical surveillance, CCTV footage, and intelligence inputs, police traced their location and arrested them during a raid in Jaigaon.

The operation was supported by the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC) along with central agencies.

Police said Happy Jatt, also known as Harpreet Singh, is a resident of Jandiala Guru in Amritsar district and has more than 20 criminal cases registered against him, including charges related to drug trafficking, illegal arms supply, extortion, and murder. He is also accused of running a heroin smuggling network into India using drones while operating from abroad.

According to the investigation, on the night of April 27, between 9 pm and 9:30 pm, four bike-borne attackers opened indiscriminate fire on three individuals in a village near Batala. Kashmir Singh and Jugraj Singh died on the spot, while another youth sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.

After being produced before the Alipurduar Court on Wednesday, the accused were granted transit remand and are being taken to Punjab for further interrogation and legal proceedings. Police are continuing their search for the fourth attacker while the investigation into the larger conspiracy remains underway.
