Allegations of Illegal Garbage Dumping Along India–Bhutan Border Raise Environmental Concerns
Serious allegations have surfaced regarding the illegal dumping of municipal waste along the dry bed of the Torsa River near the India–Bhutan border under the jurisdiction of Jaigaon Police Station.Local residents claim that large quantities of urban garbage are being dumped on the riverbed, leading to severe environmental pollution. The situation has reportedly worsened as the waste is often set on fire, releasing thick smoke into the air and creating an unbearable stench in the surrounding areas.
Apart from air pollution, the open dumping has raised public health concerns. Cattle and other animals are frequently seen scavenging through the waste, increasing the risk of disease transmission. The affected site is located near a cremation ground and a playground, causing inconvenience not only to visitors but also to villagers living nearby.
Residents allege that despite repeated complaints to various authorities, no effective steps have been taken to address the issue.
On Friday at around 2 pm, a delegation from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) visited the spot to assess the ground situation. After inspecting the area, members of the delegation expressed concern over the environmental damage and the health risks posed to local communities. They reportedly called for immediate intervention by the concerned authorities to stop the dumping and ensure proper waste management in the region.
The matter has once again highlighted the urgent need for strict monitoring and sustainable waste disposal practices along ecologically sensitive zones. Watch News On Video Click
