64-Year-Old Killed in Tsirang Highway Accident
Tsirang: A 64-year-old man died following a road accident on Sunday evening at Gomsum, along the Tsirang–Wangdue Phodrang highway.
The man was travelling towards Gelephu with one passenger when the vehicle went out of control. Police said the vehicle broke through two roadside culverts before plunging nearly 300 metres down a steep cliff.
Rescue teams reached the site shortly after the incident. The passenger survived the crash and was first taken to Damphu Hospital. He was later shifted to the Central Regional Referral Hospital in Gelephu, where doctors reported his condition as stable.
Due to poor visibility, steep terrain, and thick vegetation, search teams were unable to locate the driver during the night. For safety reasons, the operation was halted around 10.30 pm.
The search resumed early Monday morning, and the body was recovered at around 7.20 am. The deceased was later handed over to his son.
According to preliminary police assessment, the accident was likely caused by speeding and loss of vehicle control. Police also noted that the vehicle was travelling uphill on a relatively wide section of the highway when the accident occurred.
