Stolen Gold Recovered, One Arrested by Jaigaon Police
Mahabul Haque : Jaigaon 14 January 2026: Jaigaon Police have successfully recovered stolen gold and arrested one accused in a theft case reported from Subhashpally under Jaigaon Police Station limits.
According to police sources, on 26 November 2025, gold shop owner Jaydeep Sutradhar lodged a complaint at Jaigaon Police Station stating that one of his employees, Sanjay Dey, who was working as a goldsmith, had absconded with 23 grams of gold. The gold had been handed over to the accused for making jewellery, but he fled without returning it.
After waiting for several days and failing to get any information about his employee, the shop owner filed a formal theft case. Following the complaint, police immediately initiated an investigation. The case was taken up by SI Biswajit Barman under the guidance and direction of Jaigaon Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mingma Lama.
During the course of the investigation, the accused remained absconding for several days. Acting on intelligence inputs and sustained efforts, police eventually succeeded in arresting him. The accused was produced before the court and taken into police remand, during which the stolen 23 grams of gold were recovered.
The recovered gold is estimated to be worth around Rs 3 lakh. The arrest and recovery were completed within approximately 18 days of the complaint being filed, further strengthening public trust in police action.
On Wednesday, a press conference was held at Jaigaon Police Station where OC Mingma Lama briefed the media about the entire incident. He stated that the police treated the case with utmost seriousness and carried out the investigation based on the complaint of the shop owner, leading to the arrest of Sanjay Dey.
The accused, Sanjay Dey, is a resident of Khagrabari, Pundibari area in Cooch Behar district.
Following the recovery of the stolen gold, the shop owner expressed happiness and praised the efforts of Jaigaon Police. He also appealed to other shop owners to remain cautious while hiring employees. He added that collecting proper identity documents from workers had helped the police conduct a faster and more effective investigation.
