Auto Paint House in Punakha Gutted by Fire, Estimated Loss at Nu 3.5 Million
A massive fire broke out around 12 pm yesterday at Lobesa, Punakha, completely destroying the only Auto Paint House in the district. The temporary structure was reduced to ashes, and a Santro car parked in front was also burned beyond repair. A roller and a scrap van nearby sustained partial damage. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
The 32-year-old proprietor from Samtse said he had stepped out briefly when he saw smoke and flames coming from the doorway within minutes. He attempted to save his vehicle, but a chemical explosion from inside had already engulfed it in fire.
Officials said the presence of highly flammable paint thinners and chemicals caused the flames to spread quickly. By the time firefighters reached the site, the entire building and its contents — including paint supplies, equipment, and a laptop — were destroyed.
The owner estimates his total loss at around Nu 3.5 million. The Santro car, however, was only covered under third-party insurance, offering no compensation for the damage.
While investigations are ongoing, the owner suspects an electrical short circuit triggered the blaze, pointing to recurring power line issues in the area.
Established just nine months ago, the Auto Paint House was located along the Punakha–Wangdue highway and supplied automotive paints to 10 dzongkhags, including Trashiyangtse.
