Police Crack Down on Illegal Cattle Slaughter and Smuggling in Jaigaon, 11 Cows Rescued
Police carried out a major operation against alleged illegal cattle slaughter and smuggling in the Jharna Basti area of Jaigaon, located along the India-Bhutan border. Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a raid in the locality and rescued 11 cows.
According to police sources, complaints regarding illegal animal slaughter and unauthorized meat sales had been repeatedly received from the Jharna Basti area. Police later received specific information that several cows had allegedly been brought to the area for illegal slaughter and smuggling purposes. Following the input, plainclothes police personnel were deployed in the locality to keep the area under surveillance.
After confirming the information, police conducted a raid and recovered 11 cows from beneath the house of local resident Mintu Miya. A case has been registered under relevant government regulations, and the rescued cows have been sent to a government shelter.
Notably, two days ago, police had arrested another resident of Jharna Basti near Jaigaon Pulia with around 250 kg of alleged beef. Following that arrest, police intensified their action in the area.
Sources said that after the BJP government came to power in the state, the administration has increased monitoring and action against illegal cattle trade and unauthorized animal slaughter across different parts of the state. The latest operation in Jaigaon was part of that ongoing drive.
