Rhododendron Festival Opens in Merak with Royal Presence

His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen, accompanied by Their Royal Highnesses Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, Gyalsey Ugyen Wangchuck, and Gyalsem Sonam Yangden Wangchuck, graced the opening of the second edition of the Rhododendron Festival at Sheytemi in Merak, Trashigang, today.
His Royal Highness Gyaltshab Jigme Dorji Wangchuck and Ashi Yeatso Lhamo also joined the royal entourage at the festival, which drew a crowd of more than 8,000 attendees.
The week-long festival, running from 3 to 9 April at an altitude of approximately 2,900 metres above sea level, celebrates the vibrant blooming season of rhododendrons. Bhutan is home to around 46 species of rhododendron, with 41 species found in the highland regions of Merak and Sakteng.
The festival featured a rich display of traditional dances, songs, and local games, highlighting the unique cultural heritage of the highland communities. Visitors also had the opportunity to explore and purchase local products distinctive to the region.
Merak and the neighbouring Sakteng Gewog, located within the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary, are known for their unique highland traditions and rich biodiversity. The festival aims to promote eco-tourism while preserving the cultural and natural heritage of the area.
The event is organised by Trashigang Dzongkhag in collaboration with the Department of Tourism.
