Black-necked Crane Population Drops to 622 Last Winter

Bhutan recorded a total of 622 Black-necked Cranes across its wintering habitats this year, marking a decline from 709 counted in 2024.

The nationwide survey was conducted on February 14, 2026. Officials attributed the drop to earlier migration observed this season, which likely reduced the number of cranes present during the count.

Phobjikha recorded the highest number with 547 cranes, including 52 juveniles. Bomdeling followed with 52 cranes, of which 10 were juveniles.

In Gaytsa, 16 cranes were counted, including two juveniles, while Khotokha recorded five cranes with one juvenile. Dungkhar reported two cranes.

The annual population count was carried out through a coordinated effort involving local communities, hoteliers, forestry officials, and the Royal Society for Protection of Nature.

Despite the decline, conservationists remain hopeful, noting that migration patterns can vary from year to year. The annual survey continues to play a vital role in monitoring and protecting Bhutan’s iconic winter visitors.
