Children Recite Lolay at Lingkana Palace on Nyilo
Nyilo marks the return of longer days following the winter solstice and is observed as the New Year in parts of the country, particularly in western Bhutan. The festival is closely associated with the age-old tradition of children visiting homes to recite Lolay, offering prayers and wishes for the well-being, prosperity, and happiness of households. Each year, the Folk Heritage Museum, under the auspices of the Tarayana Foundation, invites children from schools across Thimphu to participate in the celebrations. In the days leading up to Nyilo, the children visit homes around the capital to recite Lolay, helping keep the tradition alive among younger generations.
Over the years, the Nyilo visit to Lingkana Palace has become a special and cherished tradition, symbolizing the continuity of Bhutan’s cultural heritage and the importance of passing it on to children.
