Box-Cut Bypass Road Construction Site Inspected Along Gelephu–Trongsa Highway
Gelephu, 7 January 2026
The Hon’ble Secretary and the Director General of the Department of Surface Transport under the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport visited the Box-Cut Bypass Road construction site along the Gelephu–Trongsa Highway today to review the progress of the project.
The bypass road project, launched in April 2025, is being implemented with financial support of Nu. 699.05 million from the Government of India. It involves the construction of a 9.2-kilometre double-lane road built to Primary National Highway standards. The project also includes five bridges, each measuring between 25 and 40 metres in length.
Officials were briefed on the current status of the works, with around 10 percent of the construction completed so far. The project is scheduled for completion by April 2028.
Once operational, the Box-Cut Bypass Road is expected to play a critical role in improving road safety and travel reliability by diverting traffic away from the existing Box-Cut and Ossey slide-prone areas. The bypass will provide a safer and more efficient route for commuters and freight movement along this important national highway corridor.
The visit underscored the government’s continued focus on strengthening road infrastructure to support connectivity, safety, and economic development.
