Three Arrested in Jaigaon for Attempted Smuggling of Banned Cough Syrup to Bhutan
Jaigaon, Wednesday:
Jaigaon Police arrested three persons, including one Bhutanese national, for attempting to smuggle banned cough syrup using a Bhutan-registered bus. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the police intercepted a bus travelling from Kolkata to Bhutan and conducted a thorough search. During the inspection, officers recovered 60 bottles of banned cough syrup from the possession of the bus driver. Following interrogation, two more persons were arrested in connection with the case.
According to police sources, the smuggling operation had been ongoing for a considerable period along the Bhutan–Kolkata route. However, due to lack of concrete information, earlier attempts to intercept the racket were unsuccessful. Investigations revealed that the banned cough syrup had been procured from the Dharmatala area of Kolkata and was intended to be illegally transported into Bhutan.
Addressing a press conference, Officer-in-Charge of Jaigaon Police Station, Mingma Sharpa, confirmed the arrests and seizure. He stated that the detained individuals include bus driver Sanjay Choudhury, alleged linkman Sagar Chhetri, a resident of Pragati Toll, Jaigaon, and a Bhutanese national identified as Namgay, a resident of Dagana district, Bhutan. Namgay is also a bus driver operating on the Phuentsholing–Thimphu route.
All three accused have been arrested and a case has been registered against them under the NDPS Act. Further investigation into the smuggling network is currently underway.
