MoESD Signs MoU with Special Olympics Bhutan to Advance Inclusive Education and Sports
The Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Special Olympics Bhutan during the opening ceremony of the First National Unified Champion Schools (UCS) Competition, being held in Thimphu from December 21–23.
The MoU was signed by the Ministry’s Dasho Secretary and the President of Special Olympics Bhutan, marking a significant milestone in strengthening inclusive education and expanding access to inclusive sports for students with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
This long-term partnership aims to expand UCS programs across schools, enhance the capacity of educators and personnel, and foster a strong culture of inclusion in line with the Ministry’s inclusive education policy. The collaboration also aligns the Ministry with the Special Olympics Global Coalition for Inclusion, supporting the translation of inclusive education policies into practical and sustainable actions through initiatives such as Unified Champion Schools and Unified Sports.
Recognising Sports and Physical Activities (SPA) as an integral component of holistic education under Bhutan’s Education Policy, the introduction of UCS programs will further strengthen SPA by providing structured, inclusive opportunities that promote healthy lifestyles, teamwork, social integration, mutual respect, and active participation among all students.
Together, MoESD and Special Olympics Bhutan reaffirm their commitment to building inclusive, supportive, and empowering learning environments for every child.
