Major Blaze Erupts on Kolkata’s Ezra Street Early Saturday
A major fire erupted on Ezra Street near Lalbazar in Kolkata early Saturday morning, destroying multiple shops and triggering widespread alarm in the locality. The incident was reported at around 5:26 AM, when flames were spotted inside a warehouse situated in a multi-storey building.
Preliminary findings suggest that the fire began in a storage unit filled with electronic equipment. The warehouse also reportedly contained large bundles of electrical wires and several other combustible materials, which helped the flames spread swiftly. Passersby noticed thick columns of black smoke pouring out of the building and promptly informed the fire brigade.
Within minutes, the blaze escalated, moving from one shop to another and blanketing the narrow lanes with dense smoke. Around 20 fire tenders were deployed to the scene, and firefighters are currently using ladders and advanced equipment in their attempts to bring the blaze under control. The congested layout of the area has made their task significantly more challenging.
The fire has also reached nearby residential blocks, raising concerns about further damage. Authorities have disconnected power supply to surrounding houses as a safety measure. Officials have yet to confirm whether any individuals remain trapped inside the affected structures.
Although the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, fire officials suspect that a short circuit in the electronics warehouse may have sparked the incident. Local shopkeepers fear heavy losses as the fire continues to spread.
Fire services personnel are working relentlessly to contain the inferno, but the situation remains tense and far from stabilised.
