Elephant Calf Found Dead in Naxalbari’s Maryview Tea Estate
Naxalbari, November 2 — The carcass of a baby elephant was discovered on Saturday morning at Maryview Tea Estate in Naxalbari. Locals first spotted the body lying in the mud and immediately informed officials from the Bagdogra Forest Range.
According to forest sources, a herd of over 100 elephants had been roaming around the Dalgaon forest area under the Bagdogra Range for the past two days. The herd had caused extensive damage to crops in the surrounding villages. After hours of effort, forest department personnel managed to drive the elephants back into the Dalgaon forest late Friday night.
It is suspected that the calf may have fallen into the mud while the herd was returning to the forest and was accidentally trampled by other elephants.
Forest officials reached the site soon after receiving the information and recovered the carcass. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Authorities continue to monitor elephant movement in the area to prevent further incidents.
