Bharat and Bhutan Take Forward Rail Connectivity Initiative
New Delhi: India and Bhutan have taken an important step toward enhancing regional connectivity and bilateral cooperation with the first meeting of the Project Steering Committee on the India–Bhutan Rail Links Project, held today in New Delhi.
The meeting was co-chaired by Mr. Munu Mahawar, Additional Secretary (North), Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, and Mr. Karma Wangchuk, Secretary, Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, Royal Government of Bhutan.
During the session, both sides held detailed deliberations on the implementation modalities of the two proposed cross-border rail links — Kokrajhar–Gelephu and Banarhat–Samtse. These rail corridors are expected to significantly boost trade, connectivity, and people-to-people ties between the two neighbouring nations.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Railways, along with representatives of the State Governments of Assam and West Bengal, also participated in the meeting, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts across multiple levels of administration.
The India–Bhutan rail initiative is seen as a major milestone in strengthening the historic friendship between the two countries and advancing shared goals of progress, development, and regional integration.
