27-Year-Old Monk Drowns in Mao River, Body Recovered Near Assam Border
Gelephu | November 7, 2025:
Tragedy struck in Gelephu last evening after a 27-year-old monk drowned while attempting to cross the Mao River.
The monk’s body was recovered earlier today at the confluence of the Mao and Taklay rivers, on the Assam side of the border. According to sources, the deceased, who was pursuing monastic studies at a monastery in Bumthang, had recently returned to his native village in Chhuzergang Gewog.
Preliminary reports suggest that he tried to wade across the Mao River to reach home when the unfortunate incident occurred.
Police, along with relevant authorities, have launched an investigation into the case.
