Woman Lost Life After Flash Flood Sweeps Vehicle Off Gelephu–Trongsa Highway
A tragic incident was reported from the Aieslip stretch along the Gelephu–Trongsa highway yesterday, where a 48-year-old woman from Phangkhar village in Zhemgang lost her life after a sudden flash flood swept away a vehicle.
According to preliminary reports, the woman had travelled to Gelephu for eye treatment and was returning home after getting a ride from a fellow villager, who was driving a newly purchased utility vehicle.
The vehicle owner stated that the road conditions appeared normal with no visible signs of flooding when they reached the area. However, a sudden and powerful surge of water swept the vehicle off the highway. While the driver managed to escape safely, the woman could not be rescued.
The deceased is survived by her husband and two children.
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
With the monsoon season underway, officials have urged commuters to remain highly cautious while travelling, as flash floods and landslides can occur suddenly along highways across the country, posing serious risks to motorists.
