New Khuru Kuenphen Zam Bridge Opens in Punakha

A new cantilever bridge, Khuru Kuenphen Zam, was inaugurated today in Khuruthang, Punakha, improving transport links and easing travel in the region.

The 100-metre prestressed concrete bridge has been designed to IRC 70R standards and can handle vehicles weighing up to 100 metric tonnes. It includes a 7.5-metre-wide double-lane carriageway, allowing for smoother two-way traffic movement.

Constructed through a design-and-build approach, the project was carried out by JY Engineering Consultant in partnership with Rigsar Construction Pvt. Ltd.. The bridge now connects several gewogs such as Dzomi, Chubu, Toewang, Shenga, and Lingmukha, while also improving access between Punakha and Khuruthang town.

It forms an important part of the Bajo–Khuru Secondary National Highway, offering a shorter route toward Wangdue Phodrang and helping reduce travel time.

Built with attention to both safety and appearance, the structure includes sufficient freeboard and lighting features, complementing the landscape around Punakha Dzong.

The bridge was completed in February 2026 at a cost of Nu 250 million, with support from the Government of India.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Chandra Bahadur Gurung and Sandeep Arya.

The old Bailey bridge, built in 2003, has now been removed following the completion of the new structure.
