Bhutan off to strong start at ITF Asia U-14 Development Championships in Cambodia
Bhutan began its campaign on a positive note at the ITF Asia 14 & Under Development Championships 2026 in Cambodia, with three of its four players advancing to the round of 16 today.In the boys’ singles category, 12-year-old Pelthop Wangyel Tshering from Lhuntse delivered an impressive performance, winning his opening match in straight sets against a Mongolian opponent. He was joined in the next round by 14-year-old Tenzin Dudu, who also secured a straight-sets victory over a player from Timor-Leste.
In the girls’ singles, 14-year-old Sumeru Semzang Yangchen from Haa advanced after defeating her Cambodian opponent in straight sets. However, Bhutan’s fourth representative, 13-year-old Yithro Yitshog Yidhenma from Wangdue Phodrang, exited the tournament after losing her match in straight sets to a Pakistani opponent.
The championship features 23 players each in the boys’ and girls’ singles events, with young athletes representing 12 countries from Southeast and East Asia. The 12-day tournament will conclude next Saturday.
