Sri Lankan National Jailed for 30 Years Over Killing of Bhutanese Woman in Canberra
Canberra: A court in Canberra has sentenced a Sri Lankan man to 30 years’ imprisonment for the murder of a Bhutanese woman in 2023.
Court proceedings revealed that the woman was fatally attacked inside a storeroom at the National Zoo and Aquarium, where the accused stabbed her multiple times after she refused his romantic advances. She died as a result of the injuries sustained in the attack.
After the incident, the man attempted to end his own life and was taken to hospital for treatment. Once discharged, he was taken into custody and charged with murder.
The court imposed a 30-year custodial sentence, ruling that the offender will not be eligible for parole until 2043. The judgment highlighted the seriousness of the crime and its devastating impact.
The case has renewed discussions around workplace safety and violence against women, especially within multicultural and migrant settings. The verdict has brought some sense of closure to the victim’s family and the Bhutanese community, who continue to mourn the loss caused by the tragic crime.
